I recently saw the Oprah episode where Jerry Seinfield's wife purees steamed veggies into her kids' foods. She used a Rice / Veggie steamer, and I'm wondering if that makes the process go faster?

I cook brown rice when I can, but it takes an hour, and I often don't have that much time to whip up dinner. Does anyone know if one of those things would cut down on that time?

There's one an ad at Target this week for $25.

Thanks!

I would imagine it would save time. I don't have one yet. Not alot of space in my kitchen. I have a hard time getting rice perfect on the stove top. I do bake it in the oven though, and it turns out good then.

I got one as a gift and never used it...ended up giving it away, new in the box. I just do it the way my Mom taught me and I boil rice, like I boil pasta. I don't use the water absorbtion method unless I'm making pilaf. 1 cup of dry rice takes 20 minutes to cook perfectly...just drain and fluff! Same for brown! I use a metal veggie basket to steam veggies and it works out really well for me. Just depends on what you're used to I think.

I think it also helps to rinse your rice in a strainger before cooking, esp white rice...
