When you make it do you use canned beans or fresh green beans?

When I have made the Campbells Soup version, we used canned as it called for, but I am thinking it would be much better with fresh.

Also ~ would you mind sharing your recipe??

I don't care for the fresh green bean texture in green bean casserole.I don't have measurments but this is what I do-

2 cans of green bean's drained well,If you want drain a can of mushrooms to.Add them to a 2 quart glass dish.

In bowl mix 1 can of cream of mushroom soup,1/4-1/2 cup milk depending how thin you want it,a couple slashed of soy sauce, very little salt and some pepper.A small handful of french fried onions.Mix it in real good and mix it into the green beans.Top with more french fried onions and bake at 350 until the onions on top are golden brown.

I think that is one of the most disgusting casseroles ever invented. I can't believe how many people eat it. BLECH! My mom always made a broccoli-cheese casserole and I never even had this green bean one until I was in my 30's. The onions on top are the only edible part!

LOL! ITA! I cannot eat it or even look at it. It looks suspiciously like vomit to me.

I am also surprised it's so popular. My sister makes it for her Dh every holiday and it sits on the stove for him to serve himself, we can't even stand to have it on the table and we tease him mercilessly. LOL

I just googled and here is a recipe using fresh green beans:

Thanks for the google ~ however you now have made it very unappetizing for me.

Hopefully the others that you tease about it have a good sense of humor - personally I think that is the rudest table behavior ever.

LOL?! What is? That we tease my BIL about him eating the casserole? He actually made fun of himself the first time he requested it and it snowballed from there! We have great senses of humor all around in our family...it's not an issue at all. Just like I love anchovies and nobody else in my family does...you probably don't want to hear the comments they make about them. LOL

Sorry...we're all different and eat and do different things. Sometimes I forget that I shouldn't make comments unless they're positive. I didn't mean to offend you...

I agree w/Maleesa that I just dont care for the texture of fresh green beans,so I too add the canned....the key is definately DRAINING well and I usually even pat a paper towel over them.

There is also more than 1 green bean casserole recipe to be found.....although I have made and do like the classic campbells one my fave is my Moms recipe made w/the cornflakes.

I'll check to see if it's posted...or will post it so you can have a look at it.

p.s.

it is posted in the Thanksgiving sticky....it really is fantastic!!!My Mom has made it for YEARS...have a look over the ingredients and see if yuor family might like it...its a great change from the f.f.onion one.

I have never made this before and I am planning on it for Thanksgiving, if we stay home. I agree that it does not look too appealing, but it does have a wonderful taste to it. I am quite sure that my kids will not eat any so I am just going to make 1/2 a recipe.
