I have never made soup before but I think I would like to today. I was thinking I'd like to make a cream of turkey rice though. Can anyone talk me through my soup making?

If a person has never made soup before, they may be under the impression that it has to be simmered on the stove all day long. In fact, a soup like you're describing will be very quick to make. That's one of the wonderful aspects of soup - it is a quick, frugal and filling meal.

First, it helps if you have a recipe. I use allrecipes.com a lot. Here is one I found ...

After-Thanksgiving Turkey Soup - Allrecipes

Instead of boiling the turkey carcass, I would start with canned chicken broth and start at step #2. You can scale down the recipe to meet the needs of your family.

Good point Cookie2!! Yes, there are some soups/stews that do require hours of cooking, but many do not. I think cream soups do not require all day cooking. I actually made a cream of celery soup for a casserole I wanted to make and from start to finish, I think it took me about 30 minutes to make the soup. I TOO got the recipe off allrecipe.com
So Maryfs, take a look at allrecipe.com and let us know how it turns out.
