I keep mine on a glass cake stand on the kitchen counter. I love the way it looks. We eat a lot of fruit, so I'm always replacing what is eaten with my stash in the fridge.

I have an apple shaped glass dish that my mom gave me (it was my grandmothers). I keep apples in that on the counter. I keep the bananas on a banana hanger. Most other fruits go in the fridge in the tupperware fridge smart containers.

We have various bowls we rotate it in throughout the year, but it's mostly just in a bowl on the counter.

My MIL does that too, that is the way (I've heard) they do it in France. I on the other hand, leave bananas out and that's about it. I don't think a cake stand would encompass the fruit we have though, for instance I have 3 bananas out, 4 apples in the fridge, eight pears in the fridge, six tomatoes in the fridge (I know, I know, they say to never refrigerate tomatoes), and a bag of tangerines in the fridge. So I have to ask do you put out what you can fit on the glass cake stand and keep the 'duplicates' in the fridge? Or do you market every day? My MIL will go shopping every other day or so for fresh fruit. Ok had to edit to add that I didn't read your post very well and you explained that all in it. I went back to edit and it didn't save my change.

I found this cool fruit bowl at OrganizationPlace.com. I really like the whole banana hangar that is included on the bowl so I can make sure all of my fruit is good in one place. It's been pretty useful.

We keep ours in an old mixing bowl in the middle of our kitchen table. As it is an eat-in kitchen it's a great place to keep it and we have a galley-style kitchen with very minimal counter space. Plus, it's on the way out the door so the kiddos just grab a piece of fruit as they are going...or coming for that matter.
