I buy no means consider myself any kind of cook. I am a recipey reader. Maybe I might be a litlle bit of a cook if I know what spices were what. When I watch Rachel Ray she says that cumin gives a smokey flavor. Now see I need to know what spices do what. Who would like to give me a run down or maybe know of a website that might tell you what tastes the spices have???? pleeeeease

One easy way to learn is just know what types of spices go with what type of cuisine.

Mexican= cumin, chili powder, onion, garlic
Italian=basil, oregano, onion, garlic
Chicken/poultry=thyme, sage, or paprika
Sweets=cinnamon, or nutmeg or mace for a stronger flavor

The only other spices I use are dry mustard for salad dressing, red pepper flakes to make something spicy. I don't cook fish, so there are probably others to use for that.

The website epicurious has a great food and drink dictionary...

Cumin is really popular in all different types of cooking, as with most spices.

I looked up cumin at Epicurious for ya...

Thanks mommy2mercedes. You are always so helpful. It seems that you know everything. What would we do without you?
