I put other. It depends on what the birthday person wants, sometimes it is bakery cake other times it is made from a box mix. I NEVER make cake from scratch, mixes are too good and cheap!

I make cakes and frosting from scratch. I do use cake mixes to make the "crust" of cookie bars, but not for cakes.

I make cupcakes for the kids also. They are more work but it is so much easier when you have little people running around.

Now I know I'm an oddball

I use boxed cake mix and home made frosting. I just can't pay bakery price. Not to mention, I don't like frosting!

I have done all 3. Every kid deserves a character cake at least once, and I am not that talented at decorating. I too would love to take a cake class. I have sworn off canned frosting, I will never buy it again. I could handle the chocolate, but even that tastes funny to me now. Canned vanilla frosting tastes like chemicals to me. My husband really loves homemade banana cake. The kids like it too, or homemade chocolate cake. I am still working on a good homemade white cake. I have a cookbook from Frankenmeuth that says in the old days they never put frosting between layers of a cake, it was always some yummy filling, so that is what I am going to try to do from now on.
