If it were me, I'd probably just be VERY diligent with making my menu in the beginning. Purchase the foods you need for the meals you're making. If you decide you want to make fried chicken and need flour then get the flour. If not you could wait on it.
The only thing I'd stock up on right away would probably be condiments (ketchup, ranch, etc) and maybe some mac n cheese or other quick meals in case you are too tired to make a meal from your menu.
This way you wouldn't have a HUGE grocery bill your first month, but then instead spread it out over time.
Me, personally... I have WAY too much in my pantry that I don't use. If I could start all over again from scratch I would try keeping it as bare as I can in the beginning and only buy what I will use. (but that's just me!)
