Ladies, I would love to hear your ideas of what you do with the left over cereal in the box? You know those boxes that don't hold enough for another bowl or perhaps no one liked it in your family.... what do you do with it? I hate throwing it away so I usually put it all in one large bag (all varieties combined) and treat it as a trail mix by adding raisins.

Does anyone else have any ideas?

I use leftover flake type of cereal in meat loaf or meat balls. Raisin bran sometimes goes into muffin mixes. The rest I throw outside for the animals to eat. The squirrels love me around here!

When I have leftover cornflakes I use that as a topping on different potato casseroles that I bake. A lot of times I will mix certain ones together for a trailmix, they LOVE that at my house. Certain ones you can use as binding in meatloaf. If you have enough LO of certain kids cereal, the sugary kinds you can make bars out of them, similar to rice krispy bars.
If I think of anymore I will come bak and post, that's all I can think of for now though!!

I usually add it to homemade snack mix, such as: raisins, cheerios, m&m's, ritz bits etc. Also, I have used different cereals in place of rice krispies when I make rice krispie treats, they turn out soo good!

my gf makes the best mix with left over cereal..

She mixes the different kinds together, melts white chocolate bark and coats it. thenkind of breaks it up.. let me tell ya.. cherrios, fruit loops, rice chex & captain crunch are wonderful coated in chocolate..

We eat a ton of frosted mini wheat cereal.. But in the bottom of the bag there is always 1/2 - 1 cup of broken shredded stuff. I have been using that in my muffins. It is good.

Corn flakes we coat chicken breast and bake. It's a good crunchy coating. Wheaties works too.

The ones the kids like but are just at the end of the box we mix together ~ into one big cereal punch. If it's something we tried but don't like, usually someone in my Mom's club or a friend will take it. I do use it on casseroles too ~

Oh my, I thought I was the only one who did these things.

I usually mix the cereals together and put them in a container which goes into the snack bag in the car. Hey, if the kids are hungry they'll eat it. I've even brought cereal mix to group events as a snack.

I also feed some cereals to the dog, the guinea pig or the squirrels and birds. And I use some leftovers in cooking.

Rachael Ray magazine just suggested to use it in a fruit parfait where you'd use granola.

This is a nifty way to use "healthy cereal" before it goes stale. It's an easy recipe to modify. I've used fresh fruit and eggbeaters successfully, too.

Cereal Muffins / Bread

1/3 cup canola oil or very light olive oil
1-1/2 cups cereal
1 cup water
2-1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup dry milk powder
2-1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. cinnamon
3 eggs beaten in a separate bowl
2/3 cup packed light brown sugar
1 cup whole frozen cranberries OR 3/4 cup dried fruit of choice
3 Tbsp. honey

Preheat oven to 350 degrees for a loaf, or 400 degrees for muffins. Lightly spray non-stick cooking spray on loaf or muffin pan.

In a medium saucepan, place the oil and 1 cup of water. Bring to a boil and then add the cereal. Keep boiling for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool for about 10 minutes.

In a medium saucepan, add the flour, milk powder, baking powder, cinnamon, and brown sugar. Stir well with a wooden spoon. Add the eggs and the cereal mixture - mix to blend. Fold in the fruit and honey. Pour into the loaf pan or fill muffin pan 2/3 full.

Bake loaf for about 60 minutes; bake muffins for about 25 minutes. Test with a knife. They're ready when it comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in pan before turning out onto cooling rack.
