condensed mushroom soup and cream of mushroom soup? I am trying a new recipe tonight for a baked chicken pasta thing and it calls for condensed mushroom soup. I looked and looked at the store and didn't see anything called that, so I bought cream of mushroom. Do you think it will turn out okay? I hardly ever use "cream of" soups when I cook but this recipe sounds so yummy I thought I would give it a try. I don't want to ruin it though!

Condense is usually thicker and if you wanted to eat it as soup, you need to add water or milk. Cream soups already have the milk added.

There is really no difference in cooking. I usually buy cream or condensed whatever I have a coupon for. I exchange them in different receipes, with no problem or affect to the flavor of the dish.

Condensed soups are pretty much the standard cans like Campbells - if you have to add water to it, it's a condensed soup. So, their mushroom soup, tomato soup, chicken noodle soup - it's ALL condensed soup. If it's a soup that is ready to serve - like how Progresso does their soups, then it is not condensed. So, if you bought a typical can of cream of mushroom soup that you would normally prepare by adding a can of water to it, you got condensed cream of mushroom soup.

I've always called cream of mushroom "condensed cream of mushroom". I've never seen it any other way than having to add milk.

Thanks ladies. I used it and it turned out fine, but honestly the recipe wasn't a keeper. It was really bland. My 7 year old loved it but he was the only one. My almost 3 year old took one bite and exclaimed loudly as he shoved his plate to the center of the table "I don't even like this!"
