My mom was queen of frugal. BIG treats for us when we were little:

The rare event of having soda pop outside of Christmas, Easter, or Tgiving.
Home-made popsicles made out of lemonade, OJ, or kool aid
Home-made fudgesicles made out of frozen jello pudding.
Home made baked goods.

My mom made the BEST french fries! A true treat for us, as we rarely had them. There was no McDonalds in town until I was about 10.

I remember her frying them in her electric frying pan, putting them into a paper grocery bag w/salt and we all took turns shaking it.

Yum!

Fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

I hate most fried things today, but these ones were great exceptions.

My mom used to make boiled custard for us. Maybe that is a Southern thing but oh it was so yummy. I bet I haven't had it in about 25 years! She also used to put a little peanut butter on a saltine and put a marshmallow on top of it and toast it in the toaster oven. The pb gets all warm and gooey and the marshmallow gets perfectly toasted and the whole thing is just so tasty. My kids love these! Also - she would core an apple and stuff it with peanut butter and raisins, and we liked peanut butter with honey on a rice cake. We made rice krispy treats and homemade popsicles a lot too. And homemade butterscotch pudding. Mmmmm.

One thing we loved that she still makes for us is little bitty cornmeal pancakes. They taste like really salty cornbread that gets all crispy on the edges. Love those!

My mom although great baker, hated doing it so we never got a lot of homemade goodies. Sure she would bake a cake mix once in a while, but that was it.

Graham crackers with chocolate frosting
Nilla wafers
boxed pudding
cold cereal
toast or tortilla with butter, cinnamon and sugar
saltine crackers with grape jelly
