Can someone tell me what the difference is between baking soda and baking powder. If a recipe calls for baking powder and I only have baking soda can I use that instead? Thanks

They're not usually interchangeable...but it really depends on what you're making. You're probably better off using a substitute?

I agree that you normally can't use one for the other.

This is why.

Baking powder consists of baking soda, one or more acid salts (cream of tartar and sodium aluminum sulfate) plus cornstarch to absorb any moisture so a reaction does not take place until a liquid is added to the batter.
