I went to the grocery tonight to get my daughter ham for her school lunches and Almost dropped to the floor. They wanted almost $5 for the store bought.A lady that was standing next to me told me she buys the 5pound oval hams cuts them as thin as she can for sandwiches and cubes and freezes the rest.I ended up buying two of them for a little over $6 a piece.I cut a 1/2 one and got PLENTY meat for sandwiches for this week and I've cubed the rest for beans and scalloped potatoes.I was just wondering if anyone else does this?

Yep, I buy the 10-pounders (ish) when they go on sale for about $1.20#. I cut them into larger cubes for soups or casseroles, dice them small for omelettes and such, slice them thick for ham steaks, cut into strips for chef salads, and of course cut it thin for sandwiches. I really stretch them for a LOT of meals. I use my food saver and freeze them in small portion sizes.

Wow! I usually pay around $7 for an oval ham!! I cut them in half, freeze half and then bake the other half. We eat it for a meal, then the left overs are used for sandwiches and some cubed for scalloped potatoes and ham, so I can get about 6 meals out of 1 ham.

I usually get one and make a simple glaze with lemon juice and brown sugar and bake it until it is heated good, then slice it really thin and serve with scalloped potatoes and a veggie. When I buy one of the larger ones I will use the leftovers for sandwiches. $5 is a really good price for one, here they are $7-$8.
