I think it just depends on how you like your rice. Rice cookers seem pretty popular...just not with me.

I've always boiled my rice (like you cook pasta). It's just how my Mom taught me to do it. So it works for me - absolutely no issues. I got a rice cooker as a gift and I gave it away...I just have no interest in another speciality appliance item for my kitchen when a big ole pot works just as well (or maybe better IMO)!

I had one but sold it in a yard sale! I always kept in under the cabinet and it was just easier to grab a pot out of the top cabinet or a bowl and stick the rice in the microwave.

I used to be terrible at making rice, but the rice cooker didn't help any. We gave it to my SIL and they use it all the time. But I'd rather just do mine on the stove. I don't think the rice cooker saves time or makes it any better.

I have never understood why someone would want/need a rice cookier. Not being mean or anything, but it just never made sense to me. I have always used Minute Rice (red box) and never have I had it come out bad. But I do know people that have them and love them too.

We have a steamer that we use for ours. I got it for free like 4yrs ago, NEVER used it, tried to sell it (twice) at a garage sales I had, and still ended up with it.

This summer I tried it for my garden veggies and loved it. Now I use it for my rice too. Up until July, I always cooked it on the stove. The steamer is really nice and easy to use but I would never have gone out and BOUGHT one.

I love my rice cooker. I think it is all personal preference. I cannot stand minute rice or parboiled rice (refuse to eat it). I made rice in a pan on the stove for 30+ yrs before finally trying a rice maker. The difference is amazing because the rice comes out perfect every time and every different kind of rice I buy tastes totally different (jasmine vs basmati vs regular long-grain etc). It probably also depends on the brand you buy because the prices range from under $30 to just under $200.

Rice is so easy to cook, why waste money and kitchen space on another gadget?

I have three and I love them!! I like that I can make it ahead of time and then keep it on warm for a few hours and it doesn't lessen the quality. You can do a host of other things in them as well, like warm up soup and then turn it to low to keep it warm for a few hours. I have two small ones because one came with a steamer that I also love. The big one dh got on sale, and I have to say as a small family we don't use it.

I think they are great for college student rooms to cook with, you can do a host of things with them. They have specialty books that you can buy so that you can cook in your room if they don't allow a microwave. I think you can even bake a cake in them, like just set it out and leave it, come back to it and you have a baked cake.

But don't mind me. I have fondue pots, and four types of crock pots as well. I don't do much crock pot actual cooking anymore, but I love to fix something like chili, and keep it warm in the crockpot until we are ready to have it.

I also love buffet and warming trays. I have warming tray that was my moms, that I can make an entire meal, put it on a platter, cover it with foil an keep it hot until dh comes home. He has variable hours so I'm never sure exactly when he will be home, so I can fix the meal, clean up everything, then just have the platter to put in the dishwasher after he's home and we're done.

Ok sorry I went on. I love kitchen appliances!
