My dh has diabetes, and we haven't been very good at trying to control it. I need some good recipes that the whole family will eat. I've checked out several cookbooks from the library, but it seems like everything has some wierd ingredient (that costs way way too much) that my husband wouldn't touch w/ a ten foot pole. Also, dh is a meat and potatoes man (wonder how he got diabetes ) So I'm looking for tried and true "real" recipes that won't break the budget.

My mom is a diabetic. The easiest thing she has done is to go lower carb. She cuts out potatos (cauliflower steamed and mashed like you do potatos, add 1/2 block of cream cheese, butter, and grated cheddar cheese...and stir until well mixed is a GREAT replacement for mashed potatos..and YUMMY!), swapped to whole grain or 1/2 carb pasta (which is in any store now), drinks low carb milk (which suprisingly isn't bad, but it also isn't cheap), low carb bread, etc. When we go out to eat, she orders a steak and salad, but instead of potatos, fries, and that stuff, she asks for veggies. There HAS to be SOME change, but all in all, she really hasn't altered her LIFE for it.

I have diabetes and I agree with Jennifer. I would start with small changes. first, DO NOT buy cookies or any treats until everythign u currently have is gone and then only buy 1 package at a time as treat to be eating in small amounts. Swicth over to sugar free/light version. Since u are doing the shoppuing start looking at the nutrition labels for the total carbs per serving. Until your dh is willing to eat right there is nothing u can do. I would just stop buying all the stuff he wants to eat that isn't good for him. If it's not in the house he can't eat it.
The only thing I wouldn't do is the potatoes that Jennifer suggested, sorry Jen, it is very high in fat, unless u do all fat free versions.
what is also just as important is exercise. don't think of this as just a food thing. It is also dependant on when your dh sugar is highest naturally. Mine is higher in am. so I watch the breakfast and lunch food. I am almost always good at dinner.
Beware of pasta sauce, it can be really high in carbs.
I have really only changed a few things and am doing very well. You can pm me if u want more details. Each diabeteic is different and therefore no easy answers.
