I am attempting to make and can applesauce as we speak. Next will be applebutter. Canning is a first for me, although my mom always canned spaghetti sauce, tomatoes, and other veggies from her garden while we were growing up.
I'm borrowing my mom's equipment, but if things go well, its something I can actually ask for Christmas that will get used!
I'm planning to put a garden in once spring gets here (oh, so far away...) so we'll see what I can do next year! I'm glad I have a place to ask my questions.
As for the kool-aid jelly - how fun! My kids will love that! I still have to get some smaller jelly jars - then we'll try it!

  • 8 C. unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 1/2 C. sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. allspice
  • 1/4 tsp. cloves

Combine all ingredients in a 4-qt. pot. Bring to a boil over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally. Simmer until thick, about 30 minutes. Ladle hot apple butter into hot 1/2 pint or pint jars, leaving 1/4" head space. Attach lids. Process jars 10 minutes in boiling water bath. Makes 6 (1/2 pints) or 3 qts.
