She came home from the hospital last Friday fine...and by Sunday was in NICU with a 107* fever!! They have confirmed meningitis...and are now waiting to find out if it is bacterial or viral. They have no clue yet how she got it. These are super people...clean, nice house, gorgeous and sweet 2 year old dd, too...just the "All American couple". The only thing "odd" is that her ob let her go THREE weeks at 5.5 cm dilated before finally inducing. I am wondering if she could have picked up something during that?? They are just at a loss. The baby is still running a very high fever and is in complete isolation in the hospital. It is so very sad. The last thing her mom said to me on Tuesday when I saw her before the induction was "I can't wait to me her (meaning the baby!)". It breaks my heart.

How awful. I hope the baby does well. I also hope the high fever didn't cause any neurological problems long term. Meningitis is a very scary dangerous illness. Let us know how the baby does.

I cannot imagine! They must be out of their minds with worry. I will pray for that little baby, and the rest of her family too.

I was just at the dr's office yeaterday and posted on the wall was a letter from an 11-yr old miracle boy...it was titled "The boy no one thought would live". He fought menigitist for two - three years....and finally a Dr found exactly what was wrong and the rest is history. (The Dr happens to be the head pediatrician at my pediactrics office - that is why it was posted there). I guess what I am trying to say is there is hope...prayers to the little one!!

I will keep them in my prayers. I hope she is better soon.

My mom had meningitis when she was two and her sister had it as an infant. If I remember what my mom told me correctly, the doctors told her mom that she probably passed it on to my aunt while she was pregnant with her. As far as being 5.5 cm dialated for 3 weeks - I'm not a doctor, but I would think that there isn't a risk of infection to the baby as long as her amniotic sac was still intact during that time.
