I ran across a sermon on this yesterday. It wasn't the normal coming down on drug addicts or alcoholics. This sermon was directed to the congregation about their vices. Whether it was spending money, eating, drinking coffee, cigarettes or any other thing that may pre-occupy your mind or hurt your body. The minister's point was we are so willing to pass judgement on others but in our own lives we have our own issues that prevent us from reaching our spiritual potential. It's given me alot of food for thought...

it happens in Islam too, our priest would tlel us dont do this or this and his kids would be doing it! Practice before you preach!

I actually had to back off from church for a while to get my bearings. One can not be perfect and as a Pk I was put under a microscope and children can't function perfectly. It's so hypocritical that people use their beliefs to tear down others for their own self righteousness purposes, what an oxymoron. I can not count how many times I have heard judgement passed on an alcoholic or some other person with a harmful habit by someone who weighs almost 400 lbs. It's so strange to me that people don't see the irony in it, or the irony of that while they are calling others bad and pointing fingers that they themselves are being self righteous and judgemental. How we twist these religions and then talk about how they are based on love. Religion should be directed inward and the reflection seen from a person's character not used as a weapon towards others. One day we'll see our own trespasses for now we are only human and can donothing but treat others like we would want to be treated, giving the forgiveness we seek.

I'm not sure his sermon was to scare ppl off from church:laugh: I think he was showing us that overspending, overeating, overindulging in whatever can be just as harmful to us as smoking, drinking, drugs...etc

Oh no, I backed off from church b/c of criticism, back biting, and hypocracy(sp?). I know, Don't throw out the steak b/c of the bone but after 20 years, I was tired. I do tend to watch services on tv if the preacher is good. I get a good array of shows here, I kinda just watch them all. I know I will get what God wants me to from it, and I get alot. I don't let others tell me what to feel(doesn't work anyway) that isn't accepted everywhere, some people are flat out offended.

The sermon was clear to me about judgement and excess. Asking God for things yet doing nothing to achieve what your asking. Some will argue the effort is the secret of the success or God helps those who help themselves.... It's a more empowering message about accountablility with a subtle message about judgement and self righteousness. I like those, help me be a better person but don't brow beat me into it...Where's the peace, mercy, and love? KWIM?
