When you go to a viewing/wake, what prayer do you say to yourself when you're at the casket? Do you have one that you use all the time, or do you just think of special thoughts for the deceased?

When you visit a cemetary, again, what kind of prayer do you say?

Im catholic but have never been told what to do in these situations. I usually just say the Our Father to myself, but not sure if thats appropriate???

Usually I just say whatever comes to mind, where it is a formal prayer or just a prayer off the top of my head. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer on this one.

I really do not have a set prayer but I have a dear friend that is Catholic and I have really gotten interested in their prayers. I have looked up several online at www.catholic.org, when my little pup was sick I looked up the prayer of St. Francis for sick animals. And I prayed it when I went to visit my baby at the vets. Honestly though I think of God as my heavenly Father and I just talk to him like my Father with my request. I believe that if you speak to God, He hears you. But I did find great comfort in the St. Francis prayer - I don't know why. This is an interesting question.

I may be the odd ball here ( whats new?) but I dont really pray at an viewing or funeral. I usually like to reflect on that person and what they meant to me. I may remember a good time or a funny story that we shared. I prefer to remember them in a good time than to focus on the death.

I don't think it's oddball but I go to more than my share of funerals and often barely know the person who died. I have always been taught that funerals are for the living. to be there for the family. so if I don't know the person, I pray for the family and say the Our Father. I don't think there is a correct way vs an incorrect way.

I am fortunate to have not had to attend many funerals. But one thing I do do is when there is a funeral procession driving by I kiss my hand and say a little prayer wishing the family comfort. I don't know why.
