We have been having this discussion due to dd#1 being in First Communion classes.

Me-all sweets
dh- dd#1 has asked him to give up beer we'll see
dd#1-pop
dd#2- still thinking
dd#3-too young to understand

as a family we are going to get a jar and everytime someone swears or is mean to another member of the family they have to donate to the jar. 5cents for adults, 1penny for kids. then at the end of Lent we will donate the money to the church.

I have really got to decide what I am giving up. Last year was the first year I ever gave up anything. I am Southern Baptist and we have never observed Lent until we got a new preacher. I had first thought about Hard Candies but my DDs told me I did not really eat that much hard candy so it was not relly a sacrifice. So I gave up DIET COKES!!!! I could drink 12 diet cokes a day, I love diet cokes!!!! BUt I gave them up. It was really a sacrifice!!! This year I am not sure. I has thought about sugar but that is such a large spectrum. I need to be more specific. I will get back to you on this one. Maybe I can get some ideas from others that post.

I have not gotten too far in regards to this. I need to figure it out though! I am going to have to give up most of my caffeine for medical reasons. Perhaps I will have to give up some of my computer time.... (AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!)
Ok, I will think about it...

Klippy did u find something yet? I always try for something that I consider will be a scarifice/difficult for me. I am not supposed to eat sweets or at the very most very little(I'm diabetic). I'm not even a sweets person but lately I've been devouring them.

BTW- I just got the girl scout cookies we ordered. 40 LONG days is ahead. -worried-

We're not giving up anything but we are trying to do MORE.

We're making an effort to increase our charity donation during these 40 days. This is really hard for me because money is very tight. That's one of the reasons this is so important to me. I'm trying to open myself to the possibility of allowing more to flow in by letting this money flow out.

DD is making a concerted effort to pray more and on a more regular schedule. She came up with that one on her own. We bought her a new children's bible and we're reading it every night in preparation for the Easter celebration. I'm going to a church library (not a Catholic church but it's still a good library) to see if I can find any publications specifically about preparation for Easter. I couldn't find anything worth buying in the bookstores.

I wish the Catholic church had a good children's magazine that helped address these holidays. If anyone knows of one, please post!

Well - I am giving up Diet Cokes (again). I would have to say this is a sacrifice for me!!! I LOVE diet cokes. I am going to try my best to do this. I did do this last year. Wish me luck this year!!!

Is it mostly just Catholics that give things up for lent? I don't think we have ever talked about it at church.
