I mostly remember doing memory verses at church camp. We were all on teams, and at the end of the week, the team with the most points won a prize (like candy bars or something). I, too, have such a different attitude towards memory verses and even Bible study now that I am older. It has such deeper meaning and brings much more emotion from me. Anyways--
We post a Bible verse on the frig every week or so. It's usually something relevant to what we are doing as a family -- some project, behavior issue, or religious holiday. The kids repeat it together several times a day as I or they prompt one another. We also have some Bible verses set to songs that the little ones love to dance to. They learn the verses without even knowing it. I will also sometimes find unit studies or activities online that go with a verse and we will use that during our school time as a devotion or to start our Bible study. I recently got a program from Focus on the Family for young men that I plan to use in the fall that encourages verse memorization. I think it's called Dare to be a Daniel, but I couldn't say for sure as I don't have it right in front of me (it's that Mommy brain thing).
It's amazing how quickly the kids pick up on the verses and how eager they are to learn them. Sometimes they bring a fresh view to things that I never would have considered. I guess that's why Jesus calls us to be like the children.
Now, if I could just find their energy.
