It is true that extra fiber can HELP you lose weight but it's because (in food) it is a carbo that takes longer (or doesn't at all) digest. It also keeps you full longer because it takes almost twice as long to digest, or pass through your system.
I'm not sure about it's effect from an alternate source but good whole wheat bread will have 2-4 servings per slice (some have more). The recommened daily amount of fiber in your diet is abouut 25-28 g. If you up your veggie intake (slightly) and substitute your bread with whole wheat - you're really almost there.
If you take TOO much fiber you can get REALLY REALLY bad stomach aches - especially if you don't drink enough water. Fiber is important but if you pay attention to the labels even some of the sugary ceral has 2 g per serving!! Green veggies are a good source of it. I talked to my nutritionist when I was younger (getting away from my ED) and she said that taking outside sources of fiber is hardly nessicary and can cause stomach cramps or constipation if you aren't careful.
