I think it's safe to say when someone asks me something, they want an honest answer. I can sense whether or not they are ready to hear it. Sometimes I can break it to them gently if I know I don't share the same opinion as that person and sometimes I just need to say it. A wake up call, so to speak.
Of course, I've heard things I wasn't ready to hear when I've questioned someone. Different perspectives are a good thing. I may not see that right away but it will eventually come to me. Depending on the source and their intention, I try not to take it too personally. It's hard to separate emotion from hearing something you didn't want to hear, but in the quiet of it all, it's easier to rationally think about it and maybe see where that person is coming from.
Either way, questioning something is fine.
