Ok, so my dh and I want to lose 70 lbs. (20 me, 50 him) by our vacation in August. The problem we're having right now is our menu. We make a healthy supper but are starving at 8 pm and bedtime is 9:30. So we're watching t.v. and snacking. Not healthy either. lol I've been getting on our orbitrek (it's an elyptical machine) about 15 min. a day. Not much but better than before. He has not tried it yet. I want us both to meet our goals so we feel good about ourselves on our vacation. I know he wants to lose the weight but I'm having a hard time keeping myself motivated, so how can I help him too? Any ideas?

How about walking together at night instead of the TV? Or make a walking date on the weekends. I LOVE walking and am surprised at how much weight can actually be lost. Get a pedometer and try to reach the 10,000 mile mark. Granted, if you are in a snowy area, this is much harder, just bundle up!! Good luck!

You shouldn't be hungry at 8pm if you had a good dinner. Are you eating enough protein? Protein is what fills you up.

Please forgive me for saying this, but the word "diet" to me is probably the deterant.

What you should do instead, is maybe control your portion sizes. Make just enough for one sitting or make something, dish out what you need, and freeze the rest. That way he doesn't feel so restricted in having to always eat foods he may not like.

Then start making meals that incorporate more veggies, grains, and fibre. Stay away from fast food, fried foods, and carbs! Don't stock your cupboards with junk. If it's bad for you, it's bad for your kids too.

Diet sodas, over regular sodas. Water over everything else. (and more often throughout the day)

Cut corners where you can and even those slight changes will help. It's the lifestyle that needs to go with the "diet".....which is why I prefer the term "lifestyle change" over any other concept!

Hope that helps!

What is your average diet like? Are you writing down what you eat and making sure you're eating enough? You really shouldn't be starving an hour and a half after dinner but there is nothing wrong with snacking, it's just choosing the right snacks that is the difficult part. Some healthy snacks that I recomend to clients are 1-2 tablespoon natural peanut butter with banana or apple, cottage cheese with fruit or protein shake.

Another suggestion I have is to break your goal down weekly or monthly. Instead of "I want to lose 20 lbs by August" , you have about 30 weeks so set some short term goals like a 3-4 lb a month weight loss. Even though dh has more to lose he'll lose more faster and have an easier time because of the amount of testosterone men produce (so not fair!) so please don't be discouraged if he does have an easier time losing weight.

Good luck!
