I believe that the majority of Americans have been taught to say "under God"; it's just a habit to say it when one says the pledge. I think it would be very difficult for people to revert back to a non "under God" pledge.

Today I picked up my grand niece from kindergarten. She told me they were learning the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. I helped her repeat if as we drove to her house. She is in a Christian school. As we were saying it, I thought of this post I read last night. She is 6 and is just learning the pledge. She deserves for it to stay "one nation under God."
I tried to imagine not saying that and somehow it is just not the same.

It would be no different/no more awkward to change it back as it was in the 50's for the people who were used to saying it one way to have to change it. I recall my mom, if she was saying it with me as a child, she would always forget the "under God" part because that is not how she learned it as a child. She would also tell you at first ask that there were only 48 states.

bmsmgwk - I'm sure your grandniece is a sweetheart, as is mine. Mine deserves to not have to pledge her oath to a nation "under God."

It's kind of like the metric system! They talked about changing that when I was in the 2nd grade but decided it was too much change. I can't even buy gas in Canada because I have no idea what I'm paying for how much and what is a good deal. I wish they would have switched us over then because at least we (and everyone below us) would know how much a liter really is!

As a teacher, I had to sign a statement saying I would teach and uphold the pledge, so I will, whether in a parochial or public school.
I do think it is strange that the "under god" was added in 1954, maybe we should go back to the original to make it an even playing field.

IMHO- either way would not bother me. Although- if they did take that line out- I would feel like an idiot since I would probably still say "Under God" !

I can always count on you, calimari, to oppose most anything I am for, you are against it.

Let's stick to the topic at hand

Back to the topic. I am fine with "Under God" being taken out, for the simple reason it is not a part of the original. Sure there would be some adjusting to do, but just like when other changes are made in life...you get used to it.

I read this and i found it very interesting.

I like the reasons why Under God was added to the pledge.

Yes, thanks for that. I had forgotten that we're waiting on the Supreme Court to rule to have 'under God' removed. I also found it weird that Congress is considering a bill to ban the Supreme Court from making a ruling!
