What makes someone a good listener?? And if you are not a good listener, can you become one??

Wow, I am surprised no one had any comments here.

Or maybe you all just have me on your ignore lists....

I was just thinking that I wasn't such a good listener when talking to people. A friend of mine and I were talking about how some people tend to revolve any conversation around themselves, my sister is like that a lot.

And then I got to thinking that I do that sometimes too....but it is more about relating to their story and sharing one of my own, not so much that I am trying to be "it's all about me".

I also find that I interrupt a lot, and I am trying to slow down, and really start paying attention to "detail", so to speak.

I'm just interupting to say that i took you off my ignore list just to comment on this JK.

I would say that i am guilty of adding comments to someone else's conversation, not that i am trying to upstage them, i think for me it's just a sense of wanting to fit in,so i add my comments on things.

I have noticed i interupt people during conversations sometimes lately and i am trying to get better at this, but the people i usually do this too are really long winded (my mother for example) and drags a 10 minute story into a half an hour,so i have no choice but to interupt if i want to get a word in or shorten her story or if i really need to use the bathroom and she's still going on an on. I guess that's better than yelling "Shut up i have to pee!".

J/k of course!

Well ~ people like to talk to me...about everything...so I must be a good listener. I like to listen ~ get to know others, help them if they need it (or request it). It's amazing what you can learn about people, or a situation if you just sit back and open your ears.

Someitmes I do interupt. I can be bad at that...but usually it's when I have been listening and listening and listening....and really have something pertinent about what's being said. I also find that I don't step up enough and take my turn ~ I tend to get skipped over because I am a listener ~ so I interupt JUST so that I CAN have a turn. I have a couple of friends that can talk, and talk, and talk, and if you have a story they have one that beats it, or is the same as it...or whatever. These guys you have to butt your way into the conversation or you will never get to talk

I've got one of those friends who talks so fast and long, that you constantly find yourself trying to jump in, only to get cut off. If anyone was here at home to hear my end of the conversation all you would hear is "Ummm", "yeah, but....." , "Well......" etc. Drives me nuts!

This sounded like a question they would ask for the Miss America pagent. LOL. I guess I am a good listener. I try to be empathetic and put myself in there shoes. I am also sympathetic. I try not to interrupt people when they are talking. (I hate when people talk over me) I give them the best advice I can if advice is needed.
