If you have never run a race, find a training baseline. If you are going to do a 5K, go out and see if you can cover that distance. You don't have to run that entire distance, this will also give you a time to improve upon with your training.

Brad, did you want to cover the nutritional questions the members had for you? The good, the bad and the ugly!

Hi Christy - I'm here (sorry I'm late).

Hi Brad. Thanks for joining us. My question is definitely about nutrition - what to eat pre-workout and post-workout.

If you have run races in the past and want to improve upon your performance, take a close look at your training regimen leading up to those previous races. A few things many endurance athletes overlook are strength training and speed ( interval) training.

Brad do you think interval training is better on the treadmill or outdoors?

Think of what you eat as your fuel. You need an adequate amount to supply your body with the energy it needs, but if you have too much or the wrong type of fuel, it will slow you down. As an athlete, you need protein to repair muscles, and carbohydrates and fats to give you short term and long term energy. I suggest you consume appoximately 25% protein, 25-35% fat, and 40-50% carbohydrates.

Interval training is more fun outdoors, but you can control and monitor your intensity (speed)better on a treadmill

I've been doing intervals with the incline and the speed on the treadmill but wondered if maybe I should move that outdoors......
