Hi guys....I wasn't signed up for this but wanted to also say thanks for stopping in Ironman!!

I am not a runner but my 60 year old mil is! She's a power house!!!

I have a question.....she wants my seven year old son to start doing some runs with her. What age do you think is appropriate to start children on racing?

Hope it's ok to jump in!

Christy, Doing incline work in moderation will help build your tibialis anterior (shin) muscle so shin splints wont occur. If they do, rest and ice is the best way to get rid of them.

Racing at that age is fine. Just make sure you keep it fun for them. Also, childrens bones are still growing, so be aware of the amount of impact they are doing. Make sure they have good shoes and train on varied surfaces ( grass vs concrete)

I don't think my nutrition response made it on the board

overall 25% protein 25-35% fat and 40-50% carbs

1-2 hours before workout complex carbs
15-20 min before workout simple carbs (fruits, juice, etc.)
within 30 min after workout simple carbs and some protein
There are many sports drinks and nutrition supplements one can use. Some brands are (Hammer, Powerbar, Gu, Clif Bar)

I have to be going now. I don't know if we covered all the topics. Perhaps we can do this again and go over more topics like Heart rate training and strength training for various activities. Until then, if you have any specific questions you can contact me at
bradvajgrt@hotmail.com.

thanks and good luck with your training.
