How do you push past your fear of failure? (if you have any)

I am having a difficult time facing some major life changes, including weight loss, because I am scared I will fail. I have always been a perfectionist and pretty successful with what I set out to do. I'm such a determined person, I can lose sight of myself through the process. Getting back into shape the last couple of years (after having ds and becoming a sahm) has proven to be one of the most difficult challenges I have ever faced, I have not accomplished it yet and I am terrified I will not succeed this time. I have a wonderful support system, dh just wants me to be happy and will do anything for it, the problem is my own head trip.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how they have handled anything like this? Thanks ladies

I did make one small step today, I signed up with Spark People, someone on here suggested it (I don't remember who, sorry ). So far, I like how it is set up, hopefully it will help me stay positive.

I honestly don't know how to answer this question because I have many fears. However, when it comes to exercise what keeps me motivated is that I can say to myself: " I am at least doing this....and they aren't".

I also know that change doesn't come easy and with hard work there will be pay offs. Putting up mental blocks won't allow me to at least try and succeed. So I follow Nike's slogan to heart and say to myself regularly: "JUST DO IT"

Hope that helps you!

I have a huge fear of failure especially when it comes to weight loss. I have lost 20-30 lbs twice in my life before and both times gained it back and that scares me half to death to be trying again.

These are a few things that have helped...

a) Setting a reasonable weight loss goal. For me that's just getting within my BMI, not the lower end, just within. I just don't want to be techincally overweight anymore.

b) Allowing some 'failure'. Cheat days are good as long as they aren't every day. If you set your expectations too hight, failure is imminent.

c) I put in a ticker and write here for accountability. I am honest when I fail, when the going gets rough, when the lbs won't budge, when I make poor choices. The support I get here is amazing. These ladies are here for you if you want to join us on this journey.

d) I listen to Inside Out Weight Loss (free on ITunes). This is a great program that helped me walk through the fear and ask myself why the fear is there. The episodes are very relaxing. I like to listen to them before I go to bed at night. I helps me get in the right frame of mind and helps me think through the deeper issues of why I have a fear of failure when it comes to weight loss and why for some of us it's more than simple caloric math.

Hope that helps.

Failure is a hard thing to deal with. I too am afraid of failure. I had a hard time signing up for my first 5K last year as I was afraid of failure - afraid I would not be able to do it. But I'm so glad I did it.
You need to set small goals, once you feel comfortable and have achieved that then go onto the next goal. Put a timeframe to each goal - how long are you giving yourself to achieve it?
I found that once I started seeing the weight coming off, I became less & less of failing.
YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!

PS - I suggested Sparkpeople - I love using that site to track my food & exercise, as well as everything else it offers.

I was definitely afraid of failure when I started the Couch to 5k! How intimidating is that?

Set small realisitic goals.

If you eat healthy and exercise, it will eventually happen. It always does. You may not be your ideal weight but you will be stronger and healthier. You just have to stick with it and continue to challenge yourself.

Thanks girls!
I think I need to think of it in smaller increments, I get overwhelmed by the bigger picture. This is just a new kind of challenge for me, I've always been a fit, healthy person (frankly, I still am in many ways, my weight just does not reflect it for some reason). I've never had to face this kind of diet/exercise change before, but wow my body has changed in the last few years!
My first goal is to lose 10% of my body weight, I'm hoping it will help us have another baby since we haven't been successful with that so far. After that, I'll reevaluate and go from there.
Here we go....

One thing that I have always done when ever I am faced with anything, I always think of what the results will be in the long run.

When I lost over 100 lbs in 93, I knew that I would feel better and have a whole lot of energy and just be in better health.

When I started my own business, I knew that one day i would be in a postion that I wouldn't have to rely on anyone but myself.

when I went back to college at 48, I knew that a business degree was something I always wanted and now I had the financial means to accomplish that.

I have failed at a lot of things in my life, but failing doesn't bother me at all, because I tried. It is better to fail, than not to have tried at all.
