My dh went to a seminar at our chiropractor's office last week and now he's all ready to give up all processed foods, sugar, dairy, and many other-unnatural foods. Anyone here eat "all natural"? Just curious. We are going to slowly phase out one thing at a time, replacing it with fruits and veggies and hormone free meats.

I am just basically trying to wean DH off of freezer foods and junk foods. He loves fish sticks, frozen burritos, etc. I wish he would be more interested in eating fruits or veggies as a snack. He was brought up on junk food, though, and could eat as much as he wanted, whenever he wanted. I think that's part of it.

So to make it short, I'm a little jealous of you!

My DH is interested in getting off of processed foods too. For the last several months he has been mixing up Apple Juice with Cider vinegar and other supplements. He says he would like to eat healthier but he doesn't cook or plan the meals and eats very few vegetables. I'm always suggesting it would be better to get the nutrients from the real thing rather than a supplement some really have value. I would like us both to eat better but it does take careful planning and lifestyle changes.

I have a hard time getting my husband to eat ANYTHING. He often skips meals then gets so hungry he gorges on candy bars and microwave popcorn. I feel relieved when I hear that he ate a cup-of-soup for dinner in his hotel room.

I'm torn on the milk issue. Personally, I can't stand cow milk. I think it is unnatural to even drink it. My body doesn't like it much either. I never drink a regular glass of milk. It makes me nausceous. However, I prefer not to use margarine. I think that is unhealthy so I opt to use butter. And I have tried eliminating cheese (including yogurt and sour cream) from my cooking and have found that very difficult. There are some vitamins and minerals that are essential where dairy products really are the best source. On the milk issue, I've compromised in a couple of areas. I buy organic milk which has a pretty long shelf life. I don't buy a lot but it is available for when DD or hubby want cold cereal or I need it for cooking. Then the dairy I consume raw (uncooked) is in the form of something that is pre-digested like cheese, yogurt or sour cream.

We eat fairly healthy. I use whole grains, very little processed food, fresh fruit and veggies, etc. We are not totally natural or organic but I think we have a nice mix.

My fil went to his Chiropractor and started to eat as you suggest. He lost quite a bit of weight and was able to get off several meds he was on.

Sounds like my chiropractor. Though he does the Hallelujah Diet and we just aren't quite ready for that one. We also eat pretty healthy. We've eliminated the processed foods, and sugar. I try to buy mostly organic though it so expensive we can't do everything organic. A book that my dh is reading and I have skimmed through is really making my dh consider eliminating meat and dairy out of his diet. For him to stop eating steak would be a miracle!! I don't drink milk but my dh was a huge milk drinker he drank a glass with every meal now he is drinking water instead. The book is called "The China Diet" Amazon.com: The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-Term Health: T. Colin Campbell,Thomas M. Campbell: Books.

We eat mostly unprocessed foods but we still have a lot of sugar in the house. Dh is the baker in the family. I cook. He bakes. He has a sweet tooth so we do go through a fair bit of sugar.

I've heard this is a good book about the topic.

I personally do not eat a lot of processed foods anymore. I'm working baby steps with my hubby & kids. DH has been somewhat receptive but he is always looking for some of that "junk". He just would not think to grab a piece of veggie for a snack!

I love Tosca Reno -- she writes The Eat Clean Diet.

Here's an eye opener for you. I didn't eat dairy for like three or four days. In that time mine and my son's (nursing still) allery symptoms went away. The whole running nose and itchy eyes. I thought it was because the pollen count went down some. Well yesterday around lunch time I got a craving for ice cream. So I had a hugh bowl. And guess what? Last night the runny noses started back and this morning the itchy watery eyes are back along with the runny nose.
Sort of interesting don't ya think?

I don't want to burst your bubble but I know you are near Atlanta and our pollen count went way down last weekend and at the beginning of the week but yesterday it was back up to 1000. That might explain why your symptoms are back today. Dairy might have something to do with it too, although I have had allergies and asthma all my life and the only time I have found it beneficial to me to give up dairy is when I am sick with a cold and have a lot of mucus.

We have a very healthy diet too. We only eat meat maybe once a week and eat vegetarian meals at least 3 times a week. We don't use much processed food but we do have some snack food around that is processed. I try to buy whole grain crackers (my kids love triscuits dipped in hummus) and things like Annie's organic snacks (they make their version of goldfish and teddy grahams without all the nasty stuff in them) but we still eat dessert every night. I keep low fat ice cream around and stuff like popsicles and nilla wafers. I don't bake because I have a huge sweet tooth and I would eat it all. I buy a lot of organic stuff exclusively - like milk and meat and eggs and the "dirty dozen produce" - but I can't completely switch to organic because food is just too expensive right now. I tried it for about six months and I was spending about $800 a month on groceries. So I have learned to pick and choose. I will confess however to a 2 diet coke a day habit and a passion for Crystal Light lemonade. And my oldest loves Pop Tarts which have to be one of the most processed things in the world.
