Mother's Day is coming and I have been thinking about what I have learned from my mother.

Let's see -- I think the most important thing that she taught me was, life might have it's ups and downs but you can't give up. And empathy (though can you really teach that?). I remember making fun of a kid one time that was a couple years younger than me, and she shot that one down real quick. That did make an impression on me. And probably honesty.

She tried to teach me patience, but she also acknowledged I took after my father more than she'd like!
She told me to live a happy life. Don't let the difficult things, like losing loved ones, depress you. Enjoy what you have.
Take good care of your things. Make them last.
Don't gossip.
Don't talk bad about other people.
Don't trust men (that didn't work either as all 3 of us girls are happily married).
She tried really hard to teach me that going to church would fix anything that is wrong but that one didn't quite catch on either!

"Don't make the same mistakes I have made"
And I actually listened and have not done
any of the crazy things she did to mess up her
life. She is glad.

She is where I got my thrifty side from. As a matter of fact, we spoke on the phone yesterday for about an hour and the whole conversation revolved around coupons we have, samples we received, and sites to check out.

My mother taught me how to stand up for myself, to ask questions and not accept something just because someone says it is so.

She taught me how to speak and write properly by correcting my grammar and not allowing me to use slang or cut off the ending of words, so that I'd be able to hold an intelligent conversation with anyone I encountered.

Also, how to save money. I remember watching her never use credit cards. If she wanted something for herself, she'd put money to the side for weeks and when she saved enough she'd go buy it with cash. And she always got the good stuff, she didn't sacrifice quality.

My mom rocks!
