St. Patrick's Day
Who is St. Patrick?
St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland was a real person who lived from 373-465 AD. St. Patrick was born in Britain and was kidnapped into slavery at the age of sixteen to serve as a herdsman in Ireland for six years, where he turned in faith to the Lord Jesus Christ. Patrick was a humble missionary (this saint regularly referred to himself as "a sinner") of enormous courage. When he evangelized Ireland, he set in motion a series of events that impacted all of Europe.
The Shamrock as a Symbol of the Trinity
It is said that Patrick used the shamrock as a symbol to explain the Trinity to unbelievers. Patrick would hold up a shamrock and challenge his audience, "Is it one leaf or three?" "It is both one leaf and three," was their reply. "And so it is with God," he would conclude. What a great object lesson! This year, take advantage of St. Patrick's Day to teach your children about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit!
Start a Fun Family Tradition for St. Patrick's Day
By Karen Ehman
From her book "Homespun Memories for the Heart"
On Saint Patrick's Day, our kids awaken to see a trail of Lucky Charms cereal on the floor leading from the refrigerator out the front door. They then open the fridge to discover that the milk has turned mysteriously green. Then, they spy a pot of gold sitting on the table (chocolate gold coins) along with a note card that reads: "The laws of the LORD are true…they are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold and there is great reward for those who obey them" (Psalm 19:9-11). Dinner? Irish beef stew, soda bread and green Jell-O, of course!
