That does make sense with taking iron. A trick I learned to tame the cramping is to make sure you drink enough water leading up to your period, if you haven't drank enough you are dehydrated without realizing it and you cramp up worse.
My teenage DD would always have bad cramping and she started doing this and hardly ever needs to take anything for them now.
