Why are headsets / ipods often not allowed during official runs?

I can run so much faster to music.

I believe it's a safety issue. I think they include all that jibberish in the fine print of your registration cards so that the organizers of the event can protect themselves against any liability if there were any accidents involved on the streets, etc. I know that most of my races have indicated "no headphones allowed" and yet I see people with them anyway, so I gather it's a "use at your own risk" type of thing!!

Yep, it's a safety issue. For one thing if anything happens and they have to bring emergancy vehicles onto the race site then people need to hear it to get out of the way.

I know with the 3-day walk they are not allowed because the route in not completely shut off from traffic. You need to be able to hear - just as the other ladies mentioned.
