You know, I am definitely a "woman's work" type of girl, but once in a while I will do something...like, change a lightbulb, and I get all excited. I can't imagine digging fence post holes!

That is amazing! Do your shoulders feel all nice and toned tonight? Or do they feel that they want to drop off at the joints?

Wooo!!!

When we were building my garden fence, DH decided to go all manly and borrow an gas auger post hole driller from one of his friends. I just went out with my trusty regular old fashioned post hole digger, and we started. DH got one done fast, and was all excited. He stated on the second one, and I was just finishing up my first. Well, we have clay soil about a foot down. He drilled and hit that, and the auger stopped. He tried to pull it and it wouldn't budge. He pulled back and drilled a little to see if he could loosen it, it just went deeper.

I finished my second post.

DH starts swearing at the auger, and keeps trying to drill a little and pull it back (there was no reverse). All of a sudden, it takes off, and just drills itself right down, and the handle hits the ground, causing it to push the button non-stop and it's just trying to drill it's way to China! DH finally finds the kill switch and stops it.

DH ends up having to get a shovel and dig out the whole auger, and since it's clay, he has to dig almost 5' deep to free the bit out. He was MAD.

In that time, I did 10 more posts.

He finally freed it, and backfilled the post hole so we could set that post, and did one more post. I did all of the rest. There are 15 posts, he did two with the auger, I did 13 by hand.

Now, I grew up on a pretty big horse farm, and have gotten used to post hole digging, but it is hard work. At least that time I had some entertainment!

Well, I did notice that my dh has very nice arm muscles now!!! He dug about 25 holes!!!! Today we have to set my 4 posts in concrete and tamp the dirt around them, then put up the last 200 feet of fence and we will be done except building the gate!!! WooHoo!!! I will be working my muscles alot this summer since dh will be out of commission for several months. It will be up to dd and I to get all the yard work done (definitely not my norm!) I also will be taking our old picket fence and power washing it, replacing broken pickets and painting the entire thing!!!! Then I will intall it in the front of our house over the wire fencing so it looks purty!! I am going to power wash the tree swing and light pole and re-paint those too. Now this buff chick is off to finish the fence so I can assemble the pool!

Wow -- great job! I watched my dh do it at our old house but I have never done it. Now we are talking about putting a fence up at our house but it would cost a pretty penny to have someone do it so he wants to do it ourselves -- can you say I'll be learning how to dig holes?????

Cool! So how long did it take?

Want to dig some holes here? I got a TON of landscapping to do in the next year or so at our new house.
