MS Mom of the Week is a fun way for us to get to know the Mommysavers members. Newbies to the board as well as regulars are welcome to participate. The Mom of the Week is randomly selected a week in advance of her being featured. I do this so I can contact you, let you know your feature date, and arrange to receive a picture from you to include with the survey. Having a picture included is so we can make it a little more personal and put a name to a face. This is optional of course, as are all the questions being asked. If I don’t hear back from you before your “feature” date, I will randomly select the next person and then get back to you the following week. If you would like to participate please PM Christy_K_ and we will get you signed up.
Let’s get started!!!
What is your first name? Dawn
What are your kids’ names? Kaylyn
Were you ready for motherhood? Yeah...until she came along! LOL (just kidding). Dh and I had been married for 8 years when we finally decided that the time was right to have a baby. When we first got married and talked about having a family, we both wanted me to be a sahm, so for the prior 8 years we lived just on dh's income and saved mine. We put a big down payment on our house so we would have low monthly payments, both cars were paid off, so we were financially ready to go.
Have you ever met someone who has completely inspired you to be a better person? Can you tell us about that relationship and how it has affected you? My dh. He's a wonderful, positive, confident, hard-working person. He always looks on the bright side and encourages me to loosen up and think positive. I don't even want to think about where I'd be right now without him.
Do you have any nervous habits? What are they? Unfortunately, I have a lot of nervous habits. I chew my cuticles, rip paper into little bits, and break pen clips. If I'm sitting still and there's anything small within reach (like paper or a foil gum wrapper) I have to roll it, tie it, or, in general, just play with it. I have a hard time sitting perfectly still.
Did you ever date a guy your parents did not like? Were they right about him? Oh yes, and I've spoken about him before on here. I like guys who are a little different (looks don't do it for me) and this guy was quite intellectual. I guess my dad's radar was up and he suspected that this guy wasn't all that great; he couldn't stand him. We broke up after 6 months of dating. Years down the road, I found out he'd been using the internet to lure underage girls into meeting him at motels and, well, having his way with them. He was convicted of doing this THREE TIMES and was set to go to prison for a very long time, but he died before he was set to begin his sentence. I don't know if it was natural causes, someone killed him, or if he killed himself. He came from a home filled with alcohol and abuse, so I feel kind of bad that I missed any signs that this behavior was brewing within his soul. Even if we weren't dating, maybe I could have been a friend to him and talked him out of doing what he did.
What do you want your kids to remember the most about you? That I was a funny mom who loved her very much and wasn't concerned about doing everything perfectly all the time. I've always try to come up with fun ways to teach her things. I've always tried to make her laugh during stressful situations (like when she broke her arm last April). Sometimes I feed her popcorn or ice cream for dinner. C'mon, no one ever died from occasionally having a hot fudge sundae for dinner. LOL
What did you learn the most from your mother? This may sound silly, but she taught me how to speak proper English. My mother is British, so she always insisted that I speak "proper King's English" (her words). She never allowed me to use baby talk when I was little. My father is a good ole' boy who mutilates the English language, so I guess she didn't want me following after him.
How many coupons do you use on a regular basis? What is your best money saving tip? It varies. Sometimes I use 0, sometimes I use 6 or 7. It all depends on what I need. Meat is expensive, so my best money saving tip would be to use meat in casseroles, which stretches out a small amount of meat.
How did you find Mommysavers? Have you referred anyone here? Were you referred here? Many years ago, a mom I used to know recommended the site to me. I received the newsletter for a couple of years before I decided to check out the discussion board. I haven't referred anyone here because this is my little secret place to go.
Out of all the things the members here have offered in terms of advice, support, counsel and criticism, what have you personally benefited from? And do you remember specifically who the member was that offered that advice? I've received TONS of advice and support on this board from a variety of women; it would be hard for me to pick one specific person. The women on here are wonderful and possess a wealth of knowledge.
Have you ever met a mommysaver? Nope, but I hope to someday.
What is the most romantic thing your dh ever did for you? Carried me over a flooded street! LOL My dh and I both worked downtown and were meeting each other after work. There was a sudden heavy downpour that completely flooded the streets; it almost looked like rapids. I was wearing a skirt and high heels and was a bit hesitant to walk through deep, fast-running water. So dh (then boyfriend) picked me up and carried me across the flooded street (the romantic way, not me flung over his shoulder).
Tell us five things you like about yourself. Once I trust a person, I'll be their true-blue friend for life. I'm prompt, reliable, and detail-oriented. I'm very non-materialistic; it takes very little to make me happy.
What hobby do you enjoy the most? What got you started on it? How would you rate yourself? Can you show us a picture of your proudest piece of work? It's been a few years since I've done this, but I used to do a lot of counted cross stitch. I learned to cross stitch not long after I got married. I saw a cross stitch piece in a magazine that I wanted to make, so I bought one of those easy, how-to-learn-to-cross-stitch kits. The funny part is that I never made that piece that inspired me to learn because I found even better things to make. I'd rate myself as an average stitcher. My mother has my proudest piece of work (that's why I can't get a picture). She loves Thomas Kincaid, so I found one of his pictures done as a cross stitch pattern and stitched it for her. It was an English cottage with a huge front flower bed. I was constantly changing threads. I worked on it every day for a year before it was completed.
How many frogs did you kiss before you found Mr. Right? Was he worth the wait? Fortunately, not too many. My dh is an awesome guy, probably better than I deserve. He was definitely worth the wait!
What is your favorite genre of music? Who is your favorite group? Have you ever seen them in concert? I'm all over the place with this. I love everything from classical to AC/DC (rap and opera are the only things I don't care for -- don't mean to offend anyone who likes this stuff, but it's just not my thing). My favorite group is INXS. I've never seen them in concert because they've never been in my area.
List three things you have on your Life List; things you would like to accomplish before you leave this world. Live to be 100, take a cruise to Alaska , and rebuild a vintage car (preferably a 1963 Chevy Impala) with my dh.
Which room in your house best reflects your personality? Probably my living room. It’s where my family spends the most time and where my books and pictures are located.
What do you see your children growing up to be like? What career path would they choose? My dd tells me that she wants to be an elementary school teacher and I can definitely see this as her chosen career. She loves little kids and enjoys trying to teach them things. She's a very caring person and I think that's a trait that teachers must possess. She has permission from her current teacher and her former 1st grade teacher to read aloud to her old 1st grade teacher's class once a week. Also, I've joked that she would make a great salesperson. She never takes "no" for an answer and always tries to negotiate deals with people over items and tasks. I've told my dh that we'd make a fortune off of dd if we pulled her out of school and let her sell used cars. LOL
Is there something we would never guess about you? Some kind or quirk you have no one close to you knows about. (C’mon tell us!!!!) Before I leave the house, I constantly have to check to make sure the doors are locked, the space heaters are unplugged, and the oven is turned off. Then I have to check all these things again...and AGAIN! I check things 3 or 4 times before I walk out the door. If my house burns down or gets broken into, I want to make sure it doesn't happen because of my negligence.
Are there words you live by? What are they? "So often times it happens that we live our lives in chains and we never even know we have the key". It's a line from the Eagles' song "Already Gone". It sounds kind of Wizard of Oz-ish, but I believe it's true. The key to happiness is within all of us, we just have to trust ourselves to find that key.
