This week, we are talking to Pianolady, who teaches piano to anyone willing to learn.

What company do you work for? Self employed

What is your job title? Piano Teacher & Accompanist

What do you do? Teach piano from ~3pm - 8pm weekdays, Saturday mornings. Accompany school choirs for concerts and large group contest, small group contest, and organist for churches, weddings & funerals, sometimes musical theater. It varies depending on the time of year and what I feel like doing.

How did you find your job? I created my job, was the plan all along.

How many hours do you work?
20-40 depending on the season.

What sort of skills do you have to possess to do this job?
BA Music, MM Piano Performance

Do you work out of your house? Yes. I have a 600 sq. ft. piano studio in a walk-out basement.

What is your favorite thing about your job? Least favorite? My favorite thing is the ability to help others use a skill can be a life-long hobby (and the love for music). My least favorite part is the bookkeeping.

If you work out of your house, how do you balance children and work?
Our kids are grown, however, I used to have a student come watch the kids in our home while I taught lessons.

If someone wants to get started in this business, what would you tell them? Do something you have a passion about & research your business idea to be sure there is a demand for your product or service.

Do you have any advice for people that want to work from home? Plan, plan, plan. Have goals, don't be afraid to advertise and promote your business & yourself.

What do you like best about your product or service? Working with kids that are motivated.

How does your business have an edge over the competitors'?
I advertise online, whereas other local teachers don't want to, or don't even have internet access. The parents love being able to check the calendar, studio policies, and announcements online. It's a great communication tool, as well as advertising.

Bond Piano Studio

Musicians don't tend to have high incomes, but I can usually pull in ~$20k/year.

Thank you Pianolady! We really enjoyed reading your interview this week!
