Welcome to Interview with a WahMOM. Today we are profiling AMY, who works from home doing Transcription.
What company do you work for?
I work for my husband's aunt. She has contracts with two insurance companies.
What is your job title?
Transcriptionist
What do you do?
I transcribe questions and answers for insurance claims.
How did you find your job?
Last August my husband's aunt was looking for help. I won an award in high school (in the 80's lol) for machine transcription, so I was a little rusty with the dictaphone, but it all came back to me once I started.
How many hours do you work?
It all depends on how many tapes or digital statements she sends me. Some days I have no work, others I am typing for 6 to 8 hours.
On average, how much money do you make each week?
I have made anywhere from $100 to $400 a week. It's not big money, but it's my van payment and some extra money.
What sort of skills do you have to possess to do this job?
typing, spelling, knowledge of Word, good listening skills
Do you work out of your house?
Yes, which helped out a lot when filing our taxes, we got to write off a few things for having a home office.
What is your favorite thing about your job? Least favorite?
My favorite thing is the flexibility of it. Least favorite would be some of the statements are less than interesting. It's hard to stay awake through those!
Do you get any perks or discounts?
Not really. I have gotten 2 bonuses though.
If you work out of your house, how do you balance children and work?
Since it is flexible I don't have to work from 9:00 to 5:00. When school was in I would always work while my youngest was in preschool, and I'd work at 8:00 p.m. when the kids had gone to bed. It can be difficult if I'm trying to type while the kids are in the house and playing in the same room, as hearing is a big part of it. We'll see how it goes this summer.
If someone wants to get started in this business, what would you tell them?
I think anyone who is a good typist can do my job. How you go about getting the job, I don't know. I was very lucky, this sort of fell into my lap.
Do you use your own products or services?
No, I hope not to, that would mean I have an insurance claim out there.
Thank you AMY!
