Money Saving Ideas

This Tree is For the Birds
When purchasing a tree for indoors, consider asking is they'll give you a second smaller tree at a bargain price.  That's what we did this year for a tree for our deck.  We decided that since the tree would be going in our back yard, we’d decorate it with natural things the birds would enjoy. Here is what we put on our tree:

• Garland created from popcorn and chokecherries from a tree in our yard -- cranberries also work well and are readily available this time of year
• Orange slices hung with wire garland
• Cheerios strung on wire garland (pipe cleaners would also work well)
• Birdseed balls

Here are the instructions for the birdseed balls:

1 hunk beef suet
½ C. peanut butter
Birdseed
Sunflower seeds
Cranberries

Heat suet in the microwave until soft. Mix in peanut butter and remaining ingredients. Shape into balls when the mixture is still pliable yet not too soft that it falls apart. Refrigerate (or set outside) until completely solid.

Cutting Cable and Saving Big We canceled our cable about 6 months ago because we discovered that we can watch all of our favorite shows online. You can go to abc.com, fox.com, nbc.com, and cbs.com and watch all of them. The only bad part is that they put the new shows on the day after they air, or sometimes up to a week after. This is free!   You can also go to a website called hulu.com That website has probably over 100 different shows you can watch through their site (also free).  Additionally, my husband hooked up our computer to our TV so we can watch all the shows on there. It doesn't even seem like we are watching through the internet! Best thing about all of this is that there are limited or NO commercials AND you can watch them whenever.  This saves us $540 a year!  -- Member LambertGaga  To see how to hook up the computer to the TV visit this link

What's New

Holiday (Frugal) Countdown Don't let the holidays sneak up leaving you (and your budget) unprepared.  Join our holiday countdown and you'll get it all accomplished within your means!

Coming Soon: Forget the Joneses Boot Camp  We'll be kicking off the new year with a spending freeze and 6-week Forget the Joneses boot camp.  Join us and get your finances (and life) off to a great start next year!  Here's how...

Think Long-Term When Reducing Holiday Expenses  Let’s face it.  No matter how hard we try, it’s a challenge to save money during the holidays.  Even the most well-intentioned shoppers usually find that they spend more in December than any other month.  However, the holidays don’t have to be a total drain on your budget.  You can even turn seasonal expenses into long-term savings.

Santa's Helpers Contest  Have you found some great deals this holiday shopping season? Are you great at scouting out holiday deals both in-store and online? Tell other Mommysavers members about them and you could win! Five lucky winners will receive a CHRISTMAS DVD BUNDLE filled with the following titles: The Happy Elf, Santa Claus the Movie, Eloise ‘Little Miss Christmas’ and Thomas & Friends ‘Ultimate Christmas’

Mommysavers Spotlight:  Stevesgal  Member Jen has two girls, and recently found these bargains, "I got 2 things from American Girl (the songbird for Addy that was $9 and the Kitty Costume for $14) that was deeply discounted, and I stopped at Build A Bear and made an animal for my youngest using a coupon and a gift voucher, I saved $15!"
