I was thinking about investing in some of these. Through my job, if I buy a $100 savings bond, I pay $50. I can buy up to $5000 per year per person. They mature in 17 years- in time for the kids to use them for their education.

Does anyone have these or has had these? Do all places pay face value even though I pay 50%? I am now learning about these things... a little late maybe!

I have savings bonds, I think they are a very useful addition to anyone's portfolio. They offer a decent rate, are exempt from state and local taxes, and exempt from federal taxes if they are used for education. We have quite a lot, they add up pretty quickly and quietly, so we don't even realize they are growing.

I think they are a great conservative investment. The bonds I got as a baby helped me out after college. The bonds DH bought at his first job are helping us out right now.

I think bonds are a great gift and routinely buy them for the children in my life.

Consult the government web site, TreasuryDirect, for more info.

My parents and dh's mom give our kids bonds for birthdays and Christmas. Dh's family did this for him when he was growing up and he was able to make a really nice down payment on our 1st house. I also buy them for our nephews. We buy I bonds and EE bonds. You might want to look at both of them to see what will suit your needs. Good luck!
