For those of you who use the envelope system for budgeting money. What do you do if you come to the end of the week (or however long you have budgeted you envelope for) and you have EXTRA money. It probably won't be a problem for me, but just in case!

depends what envelope it is in. If it's grocery I keep in for stockpiling. other envelopes, when there is leftover I add to savings. We keep all our receipts in each envelope and occassionally re-evaluate the budget amount if we have excess.

You keep the receipts in the envelope? That is a good idea and that would be great for our taxes. Thanks for the thought!

It depends on which envelope. Most of the time part goes into savings and part into an emergency fund. If there is a lot leftover continuously we'll think about changing our budget to make each dollar scream (as Dave Ramsey says)

I did the envelope system for awhile until I got lazy. When I had extra money we would either use it for grocery's or put it in the savings for a big ticket item we needed.

Honestly, I just keep it in there. For ex: We only put $5 in entertainment (remember, tho, I use Misc. as well). We don't always use the $5 so we will save it in there - after a couple of months we will have enough for a good night at the movies. Or every month we put in about $15 for hair cuts. Dh gets his hair cut at the barber for about $7 and since I don't often get my hair cut - usually about every 2 months - the saved amount covers it.

Does that help?

HEY!!!! I have enough to remember! My mind is reeling most days. I think that my mind has "pockets": "must remember or be in big doo doo" and "hey, it's cool if you remember but no big deal if you don't" and the "don't bother". This must have been in the middle one - b/c I kinda remember typing it before.
