If you use a coupon either at a restaurant or getting your hair cut when you calculate the tip do you use the original cost of the bill before the coupon or after the coupon?

Original, to me the service should be the same regardless. Just wondering why someone would give an amount based on the coupon total?

Ok I just answered my own question...if I were getting takeout/ delivery then I would give a tip based on the total. Generally I give the same amount of money to drivers though cause my orders are never really big or compicated.

DH usually ends up giving the tip + part of the coupon to our waitress or whoever is cutting his hair. He gets coupons for haircuts all the time. I'm not sure I ever thought about it until he started tipping people more.

M'ija works as a waitress. They get paid about $4 an hour (minimum wage is $7-something).
Since the servers have nothing to do with the setting of prices, and don't get any sort of compensation in wages for discounts (in other words, if I have a BOGO coupon and I go out to eat with a friend, my waiter still has to serve two meals, even though I am only being charged for one), I always tip based on what it would have been without the coupon.
