I've always used a paper register, but since online banking I have developed a problem. I sometimes don't write items down because I know I can do it later online. This sometimes causes more work because I end up doing this too often and it takes me a while to get it all back together.

I was using spreedsheets to track my expenses but now I have found budget worksheet with which I can see periodically how much money I have left in my budget, it also provides reviews of all accounts in one place, track all my bills and also helps with budget and cash flow management.

I will admit that I don't track our checking account. We use our credit cards almost exclusively, then look over our bills carefully and pay them off each month.
