I have a spreadsheet my sister's friend used and passed it on to us. It has 4columns (date, description, amount and balance). It has 1, 2, 3 - 31 down in the date column and then I put in the deposits (salary and all the bills. I estimate the normal bills, and put in an estimate for groceries, etc. I get on every other day or so (or anytime I spend money) and I can put in what I spent. If I didn't keep the receipt I can just get online to check what I spent since everytime I do this I balance it to the bank. If something were to go through the bank that shouldn't be there I will know within a day or two of it happening since I check it so often.
The spreadsheet also has a tab for each month. I have through the end of 2009 done at this point and in the next couple of months I'll go in and do all of 2010. That way I can estimate how much we can put in savings each month, etc.
My spreadsheet is VERY detailed and has other tabs tracking our debt payoff when we were in that mode, and now it tracks our savings. I would be LOST without our spreadsheet. (i can even look back a couple of years to see what I spent on something)
I don't keep the checkbook recorder thing in my wallet anymore. Just let the computer do the adding and subtracting for me!
