If so, do you race to pay it off? If not, are you comfortable making the minimum payment? I HATE interest...I wonder if the profit you make on selling your home comes anywhere close to the interest you paid on it?

Yes, I absolutely consider mortgage a "debt" but don't lump it in the same category as consumer debt. Our rate is only 4.625 fixed, so we're not in a hurry to pay it off. We feel we're better off financially to take extra money and invest it elsewhere.

I don't really consider it a debt, and I am not paying extra on the mortgage. To me it is just a fact of life. I cannot even imagine not having one. But my attitude about debt in general is much more casual than a lot of ladies on here.

I do consider a mortgage debt. I just recently acquired my first mortgage, so have not been paying extra towards it yet. I definitely do plan on sending in more than the actual payment once I pay off all of my revolving debt. I would love to pay it off before the actual 30 years.

I do and I don't. I am like Happymom, who realizes that a mortage for most people is just a fact of life. But I do not like the interest part of it, so that part I think of as debt.

Yep, my mortgage is a debt! We have paid off all the rest of our debt (CC, Car & Student Loans), but we're not ready to pay extra on the mortgage yet. We're working on our emergency fund and actually plan on moving in a year. Once we get in our new house, we will HOPEFULLY have our emergency fund in place, and THEN we'll start paying extra on our house. We DO plan on paying it off faster than we need to, but the way life changes, you never know.

To answer your question No the profit we are seeing on our homes sell (we are two weeks to closing) is not equal to the interest we paid. It is about the same amount as the home improvement projects. However, it we were renting the place we currently own we would be paying the same amount that is our mortgage payment.
Its a secured debt is what it is in the scheme of things we look at both what we owe and what our home is worth. I know the next place is going to be a longer term home for us. We are in no hurry to pay off the home. There are more important things then to pay off a house at the moment.

It's money we borrowed for an item that we couldn't afford to pay cash for, so it's debt.

We pay a little more than the minimum every month - can't afford to pay much more, but we figure that every extra dollar we can knock off the principal is a dollar closer to the house being ours.
