Hundreds of thousands of Americans will start running out of their basic unemployment benefits over the next few weeks, with more than 650,000 people losing their unemployment benefits by September. A total of 4.4 million people, or about two-thirds of the entire population of people who have filed for unemployment, are expected to see their benefits expire.

This is probably one of the most frightening articles that I have read ... maybe it hits close to home since DH was laid off for so long. What happens when your unemployment benefits run out and there are no jobs around? They're looking into extended the benefits another seven weeks ... but really, what is seven weeks when you've been unemployed for over a year and you've probably already gone through your savings, if you had one to begin with?

My husbands unemployment just ran out. There is a place called Labor Ready around here that you can go to early in the morning. If you are one of the first people there, you can get a job that day. He is going to do that. It doesn't pay as much as unemployment, but it is a start. I am hoping the Census will call me back again too.
He may also have some side jobs coming up.
I think I qualify to go back to college, so I will do that too, but that won't help with a job for a couple more years.

Just to clarify, Labor Ready is just a day to day thing. A hiring place that lends you out to other companies. So a day to day job is not guaranteed, but sometimes it leads to a permanent job. The biggest problem with that, is not a lot of the people that go there have cars, so my husband usually gets shipped farther away because he has a car.

My husband was talking about this the other night. Apparently him and some of his business owner friends were discussing this and they are all very scared about robberies and stuff that may come from desperate people. He was going on about us needing dead bolts and a security system.

It's getting to be desperate times.

I'm worried for when MI just plain runs out of UE. We are at 15.2%, and rising - and the state is just running more and more into the red, with nothing good in the future.

Ugh.

Penelope, I hope your dh finds something soon.

I think unfortunately some will turn to breaking the law. Burglaries are up and there seems to be a lot of bank robberies lately.

If there are absolutely no jobs than we would relocate. You do what you have to to put food on the table. I suppose some will have to move in with relatives or turn to church services for help.

It is very scary. My best friend's husband is waiting to see if he got the extension. He hasn't even had an interview in months.
