I was going to say the same! We picked those up a couple weeks ago and we just got a 6 pack of the 100 watt equivalent there for $11 tonight, and a 3 way (50/100/150 watt equivalent) at the Anderson's for 9.97 each, this one was harder to find. My fil changed all theirs to fluorescent just after dh & I met, 10 years ago, and hasn't changed a bulb since, so they sure seem to pay off in the long run!

While these are a great energy saver, I heard on a talk radio show that you should not use them for studying or reading. These lights flicker and can harm your vision. We have them everywhere except our desk and my reading lamp.

They are all we use. We get them for free because my FIL works with some sort of group that encourages saving energy and all that jazz But even if we had to pay for them we would.
We moved in here in Oct. 2005 and there are still some bulbs that we havent changed--theyve lasted that long. Also, when we switched our bill went down

Also, I know that they are supposed to last longer, but how much longer? I do like the light that they give off, so if I can find them cheaper and am actually saving money buying them, I would like to.

Check your utility company for rebates - our local utility was offering rebates on CFs this winter. We bought a few at a time, which was a good thing since we found that some brands were better than others.
Most of the CFs say they're good for five years of standard use, and a lot of them have a guarantee on that. I've been dating the base of ours as we use them, and may use the guarantee if something burns out faster than it should. There are some places where CFs aren't going to do a lot of good, though. I have heard that they don't work well outdoors in extremely cold temps, and we found from experience that they don't last long in a couple of enclosed fixtures here. I guess they get too hot or something. Also, for closet lights and things that aren't used much, it's probably not cost-effective to switch to CFs. We have a few lights that are only on once or twice a week, and it's not worth it. On the other hand, the lights that are on most of the time have been switched to CFs, and we're probably saving enough already to pay for the bulbs.
And there's an additional savings in the summer, when you don't have a lot of incandescent bulbs putting out extra heat.

between my Dad working it a power plant and his ability to get my husband worked into a state about "killowatts" I now have an entire house full of "clf compact fluorescent"light blulbs...according to my Dad(the all powerful, all knowing, and naturally all wise)according to power plants...if every home in america replaced their most used light bulb with a clf it would be like taking 6,000 cars off the road.
And thats not converting the whole house- that's 1 bulb.
people are gonna have to start thinking about this stuff eventually...so hats to people who are looking to change.

that 'people are going to have to think' reminded me of a blurb I read the other day, where California is 'considering' making incandescent bulbs 'illegal',,, requiring the energy savers.... now, who knows if that'll happen, but it will probably happen here first if it does anyway lol

Funny you guys posted this - I was going to post yesterday b/c yesterday I went to change a few burned out bulbs and replace them with the energy saving bulbs, but my 2 of my lights have covers and the new bulbs are so long that they won't fit with the cover on. Does anyone know if they make shorter ones?
Thanks.

I've been interested in these for quite a while now. Where's the cheapest place to get them or best deal you've seen?

I have heard that companies are making more of the "specialized" shapes in CF, like candelabra bulbs and such, these days. You might try looking at a Lowe's or Home Depot sort of store, or maybe Googling/Froogling for websites that carry CFs. Maybe Amazon, or Drugstore.com? We've bought all ours locally, so I haven't looked online to see who carries them.
