Our bill just came. It went up AGAIN. I thought for sure with this economy and the current real estate market that it would at least stay the same, but no. It went up about $500 from last year. We pay over $6000 a year in property taxes. I just think this is outrageous. Between our taxes and our water bills (over $200 a month - we recently received the honor of having the highest water bills in the country!) this city is getting too darn expensive to live in. The suburbs look more and more tempting every year, I swear....

Texas, maggie......Texas. We will welcome you!
The property taxes at the house we are remodeling right now, are half that, and our water bill has never been more than $60/ month, and that is in the hot summer months.

I have to say that is the good thing about living in AL.

Our house is appraised for $150,000 and our property tax is $220.oo a year.

We have 4 acres on top of the mountain that was appraised for $23,000 and the taxes on that is $150 a year.

But we can't homestead the empty land, like we do where we live.

Does your town or state have a homestead exemption?

If so, you really need to check/sign up for that, it cuts your property taxes by more than half.

We have the Homestead exemption and our taxes are just under $2000.00 a year. We pay about $100.00 every three months for water. $200.00 a month for water is crazy.

I'm in Atlanta GA. We do the homestead exemption - that is our bill AFTER that. It is a huge bummer! We live intown and we pay dearly.

I'm not sure how he does it, but my dad fights any raises every time they attempt to raise his property taxes. I'm not exactly sure of the process, but it involves meeting with the board or something of the township he's in.

So far, he's "won" every year. He's also dealt with the mess that's the taxes on our cabin, and that's involved going to the State Tax Tribunal and everything.

Might be something to look into, the way house values are going down - I know that is something he uses. He's not doing anything illegal or immoral, just demands accounting for why they raised them, and so far, like I said, they readjust his back.
