My parents gift all of the kids (including kid-in-laws) money at Christmas - $500 if you aren't married, $1000 if you are. Every year, they say they aren't and we are totally fine, and then they slip us all a card, and we yell at them.
For money for bills, no. We will scrape by if we mess ourselves up.
We are working on a weird plan with my parents right now though - I have my truck that we use as a backup now because we can't fit more than two people in it, and we are "borrowing" my parents old truck that is a quad cab. When my truck blew the transmission when my dad was borrowing it, he paid for the new tranny ($900) because at that time, we didn't have the money. When the truck I'm using (theirs) needed $700 in work done, we paid for it as we did have the funds available. I pay insurance on my truck, which everyone is free to borrow, and my parents pay insurance on the truck we are borrowing from them. I did give them $100 for the registration for the year (it's $91). So it's complicated but all parties are happy.
DH's parents are so far in debt and gamble what little they have, so no sense in even considering borrowing or having them gift money to us.
