We were a one car family for many years, until my Great aunt Passed and gave me her 1989 osmobile (sp?). We just did what we had to do. DH took the car to work during the week. We planning our grocery trips, library visits, all that stuff, for weekends and stayed home during the week. I scheduled all appointments for one day and rented a car (usually $25 or less ). Lots less than a car payment, maintaining it, insuring it...all that stuff. We saved a ton of money from the lack of impulse buying! Funny thing is...now that we have 2 cars, it still sits in the drive most days!

i am blind in one eye with poor peripheral vision so I dont drive. Its a pain sometimes but were used to it. We purposely moved to a "walking city" public transit is prevalent however I must admit I never use it. My sons school is within 2 blocks so no biggie to walk, in extreme weather I feel blessed that many people have offered to pick my son up. My neighbor is always on standby and we do things for them (mow his lawn, shovel snow) Our dentist and pediatrician are also walkable.
Honestly though even if I did drive the chances of us having more than 1 car are slim. I think its one of the money savers that allows me to stay home. No I dont make a sick kid walk my dh will make arrangements to take them for me! My kids dont seem to mind we just call it free excerisize!

We have only one car actually it's a truck- and like you said if dh takes it when he goes to work i sit at home. I just have to plan my days and plan like trips to the market,to the Dr , taking my dad out ( to Dr, or just out) . Some days it isn't easy trying to shove everything in a day!
Than of course i also have a part time day job that i work ( i clean houses) and it seems the days that i have to work i spend all day running around! i have to get myself ready , my son ready and get my dh to work than come back home to get ds on the bus, than go to work- come back home wait for ds to come home from preschool. Than go get dh from work- by the time i finally do get home i am tired!
I feel like i cant get anything really accomplished because right when i do get home i have to leave!
Thankfully his parents have been letting him use their old truck but it does use a lot of gas. ( like 10.00 a day) to get him back and forth to work which does add up!
They took pity on us i think in part because i also work a full time night job and so i get to sleep in a little instead of having to take dh to work.
It's not easy just having one car- i hate it! It wouldn't be so bad if i didn't have to work but i do - so mainly i am the one who suffers because of it.

We only have 1 car. But we live next door to DH's family, so if DS has a dr appt or something major comes up, there is usually a vehicle I can use (they have 3 drivers over there, and 4 cars). But if a car is out of commission (they're all really old and ready to die LOL) then I either wait until DH is home/off or go out after my MIL gets home from work. Often she'll watch DS if I can run out and do my errands quickly, so that's a huge blessing. But yes, there are days when I feel like I'm just trapped at home and can't get out. My mom said she could never do it (the 1 car thing), but I'm afraid that if I had a 2nd car available to me constantly, I'd probably spend more money that we don't really have to spend.

we are down to one vehicle. dh's truck broke down and we cannot afford to fix it right now. my dhworks 20 minutes away, and heison shift work. when he is off i do my running around and he keeps the kids. or i take them with me whatever. but he alway takes the car to work. i don't mind staying home. i only go to town once or twice a week anyways, and i do everything on those days. inthe summer, there is enough for me an the kids to do here. we live in the country so there really isn't alot of options without having to spend a bit of money. we are happy hangin around here.

We have never been one car, and couldnt be. DH works 15 hours a day for the military. He actually has his Jeep AND work car, thank god because he drives most of the day all over the state. I work per diem, here and there, and also have to bring dd to preschool and gymnastics. not to mention all of the errands i am always running. and walking places is not an option. we live in the country.... miles and miles from everything.

We used to be a one car family but dh has gotten an older truck. WHen we only had one car, I pretty much stayed at home during the day with no car. If I knew I had to go somewhere, I would drag my butt out of bed early and run him to work.
He works for CAT now and they provide a van for him to drive. So he brings it home every night. And I have the SUV all the time. He rarely drives his truck, but it's handy on weekends when he wants to go fishing and I want to go do other things. The truck is paid for though, actually it was a bartering deal so we pay a small amount for insurance (liability only and we put down that he only drives so many miles a week with it so the insurance is even cheaper), gas and tags.
