I want to hear your story- how do you do it?

It is something I have thought about doing. Dh works an hour away, though, so I would not be able to take him to work and then have the car. I wouldn't be able to take the kids to the beach in the summer, the library during the week, that kind of thing (all our "free" entertainment). We can walk to a park and to two different pools, but that's it. No grocery store or above mentioned places.

For of those of you who do this- how do you feel about it? How does it work for you?

There is no way we could do it! My dh also works an hour away and I have to take the kids to school. Also I cannot stand the idea of being stranded at home. I would go nuts!!! Plus what if I had to take a kid to the dr or the school called.

I would give up almost anything else before giving up my car!

My dh works more than an hour away too but I have to say he is the one who takes public transit. We drop him off at the train and pick him back up but I am the one with the car during the day. You are right being stranded isn't an option.

We talked about this when the kids were little and had the same concerns dh didn't want us to be stranded. But maybe your husband could carpool or like someone said take transit. The only other concern would be when you only have one car what will you do if it breaks down?

We are a one car family. We always seem to make it work. Right now hubby drops my daughter at school, then me at work and heads to work himself. Then he picks me up after work (and my daughter walks to grandma and grandpa's after school). If need be I take public transit when he can't come get me on time.

It so depends on where you live and your transit system, along with your needs and situation. We did it for a few years and I HATED it, but we had no choice. I will never do it again - we live in the suburbs, and have a great newer bus here. BUT - you have to wait in the heat and cold, lug everything and everyone around, etc. No thanks. It's mostly teens who use it here. On mornings I needed the car, I'd have to drive dh to work - 17 mi. each way. DS would often throw up in the car - too early for such a trip, and commuter traffic makes it worse. I would have to cut my day short to pick up dh, and he'd have no freedom during the day. It sucked.

Fortunately, we went back up to two cars just before ds started preschool, otherwise, preschool and school would have been impossible. Also, ds got sick at school, what would I do? Doctor's appts. required even more coordination. Yuck!

Technically, we do have only 1 car, our minivan, we are still making payments on it. HOWEVER, dh's job gives him a car to travel in, since his job is entirely traveling. they also pay his gas and isurance. I can't TELLY OU what a lifesaver this has been. Last summer, we even took his car on vacation, just so we didn't have to keep putting gas in the gas guzzling van.

If we had only one car to share between us, we would never do it. There's just no way.

Like Missy, we are technically a one car family....DH has a truck for work, but it is not for personal use....It is a huge bucket truck! DH works for Time Warner and luckily they provide the truck and a gas card for it!

There is no way we could be a one car family. I drive nearly an hour to work everyday and dh does construction but is based out of a shop over an hour in the other direction. It would be entirely too expensive to make these trips back and forth with one car. The cost of fuel would be outrageous.

Nope, we have three.

A Honda for DH's work, they pay for it for him.

A Chevy Blaser that is paid off that is DH's.

A Chevy Van that is mine that I owe like 15k on.

So basically one payment! Also we hardly drive the blazer so we don't have much gas on it.
